Earlier this week, the owners of the two Winnipeg casinos re-opened the doors that had been closed since May of last year due to restructuring. This was the result of an agreement that saw the owners of the casinos take over many of the more than $50 million in debt left behind by the previous owners. The re-opening of the facilities also meant that the casinos could begin offering some of their more popular promotions once again.
One of Winnipeg’s oldest and most popular casinos, the Winnipeg Gold Club, began its spring and fall hours for the 2015/2016 season today.
The Manitoba government has created a task force to review the current government regulation of the 16 Manitoba casinos, and will be using the findings from the review to determine how to move forward with changes to the casino industry.
Land-based casinos in Winnipeg will restart operations this July, as reported by the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corporation. Club Regent Casino and McPhillips Station Casino are both on schedule to reopen doors for patrons for the first time in a while. Starting from July 28, 2021, both properties will now welcome fully vaccinated guests.
Gamblers must first provide evidence of complete vaccination against the unusual scenario before visiting any of the gambling hotspots. The new health and safety regulations are in line with Manitoba Public Health Orders, and visitors must provide a physical or digital version of the province official vaccination card before accessing the premises.
Reopening in July
The Crown company announced last Monday that both Club Regent Casino and McPhillips Station Casino would reopen on July 28, 2021. The properties, on the other hand, will only allow fully vaccinated people to enter their premises if they can provide evidence of vaccination. From then forward, the casinos will be open from 10 a.m. until 12 a.m. every day.
Gamblers must first acquaint themselves with all health and safety procedures before visiting. Visitors from outside the province may also visit the properties if they provide evidence of immunization. All visitors must also wear protective face masks. Temperature scanning will not be used in the casinos since visitors will be given screening questions before entering.
Guests can only enter Club Regent Casino through Regent Avenue and the Event Centre & Hotel Link Entrances only. McPhillips Station Casino access will be provided through the McPhillips Street Entrance and the Parkade Skywalk Entrance only. The Shark Club Gaming Centre at 233 Hargrave Street will also relaunch operations.
With the required physical separation measures in place, patrons will be able to access slot machines, bingo, and Electronic Touch-Bet Roulette options. Live table games are now unavailable till further notice. The Club Regent Event Centre, as well as coat check services, will be unavailable. The Gift Shop will reopen, but only to a restricted number of people.
Table Games’ Digitization
The Canadian Gaming Association said in April that it planned to utilize electronic table games at Winnipeg casinos to securely reopen amid the unusual circumstance. However, this move would result in the loss of over 100 jobs. The new equipment will be implemented at Club Regent Casino, McPhillips Station Casino, and the Shark Club Gaming Centre, according to the Crown. A voluntary buyout was given to over 150 employees, and 124 took it, 24 returned, and two were laid off.
Expenses are reduced
The Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation stated in June 2020 that it had saved millions of dollars as a result of a massive layoff of employees at Manitoba casino facilities that were forced to shut owing to the unusual circumstance. Manny Atwal, the Crown corporation’s president, stated that the layoffs saved the business approximately CA$1.3 million in 10 weeks of costs.
