Low level of online gambling legislation in Pennsylvania

Now that Pennsylvania’s online gaming law has been passed, the Gaming Control Board must begin accepting applications to open online casinos and poker rooms in Pennsylvania. However, no timetable has been set for this. We know that there is a 90-day period in which the SCI must approve each application. There is also a 120-day period for existing casino licensees to apply for a license. Once the ball gets rolling, it currently seems likely that online poker and gambling sites will begin operating in Pennsylvania in 2018.

What does Pennsylvania’s online gambling bill include?

  • Allows the use of up to 10 satellite casinos
  • Gambling from tablets allowed at Pennsylvania airports
  • Allow video games at truck stops
  • Create a basis for sports betting if it becomes legal at the federal level in the future.
  • Sets the rules for daily fantasy sports

Timeline of casino and online poker development in Pennsylvania

As mentioned earlier, there is no set time frame for the launch of online casinos and poker rooms. However, we can look at the history of New Jersey and assume that the same timeline applies there. It took nine months from the passage of the law to the launch of the first online casinos in New Jersey. Pennsylvania may even need less time because it will build on New Jersey’s experience to speed up the process. The bill also contains a number of clarifications aimed at speeding up the licensing procedure.

Will Pennsylvania share its player pools with other states that allow online casinos?

Nothing can be said for certain, but it is assumed that this is probably the case. Delaware, Nevada and New Jersey currently share their player pools. Pennsylvania’s regulations clearly pave the way for interstate gambling, so there is nothing to prevent Pennsylvania from joining the player pools in other states that have legalized electronic gambling.

Who can participate?

As in Delaware, New Jersey and Nevada, people who are physically located in the state of Pennsylvania can play if they are 21 or older. You don’t have to live in Pennsylvania, visitors from outside the state are also welcome.

Why did Pennsylvania decide to legalize casinos and online poker?

Pennsylvania has a well-developed casino industry. However, increasing competition from neighboring states began to erode the state’s margins, so Pennsylvania decided to legalize online gambling and remain competitive. Just with the estimated royalties that the state will receive, he will put about $100 million into the huge hole in the budget that he will have to fill. In addition, it has been found that many Pennsylvania residents play on illegal foreign sites. The legalization of online gambling and the passage of an online gambling law in Pennsylvania will therefore ensure the safety of citizens.
