The Saskatchewan Gaming Authority (SGA) has appointed SIGA Technologies Inc. as the first online gaming operator for the province.
SIGA is a new online gaming operator in Saskatoon. They have been appointed by the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation to provide online gaming services for all of the province’s casinos.
Saskatchewan’s government and the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations have announced plans to establish a new, regulated internet gaming platform in the province. This will be feasible after the signing of an amendment to the Gaming Foundation Agreement by the government and the federation on Thursday, which establishes a legal framework for such a website.
The Saskatchewan Indian Gambling Authority will run the new regulated gaming platform, and the income will be shared between the government and the federation, according to the announcement. The regulator will get 50% of the income, with the remaining 50% split between the federation and the provincial government, according to the deal.
History in the Making
Chief of the FSIN Bobby Cameron said the deal would benefit the 74 First Nations at the announcement on Thursday at First Nations University of Canada in Regina. Mr. Cameron said that the deal would go down in history as being the first of its type in the nation. Both online casino games and sports betting will be available on the new platform.
According to Jim Reiter of the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, the local government and the FSIN enjoy an excellent connection with casino owners. He went on to say that SIGA has built a strong reputation as a top gaming brand over the years, and that they are eager to work with the organization on the new project.
SIGA will have the chance to run the website for the next five years under the terms of the agreement. Chief Reginald Bellerose, the organization’s Chair, stated that this is a fantastic opportunity for them, and that online gaming and sports betting provide a significant amount of additional revenue, which will aid the non-profit organization in providing more jobs, contributing to the economy, and achieving financial self-sufficiency.
SIGA will now submit a letter of intent to the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation (SaskGaming) to establish the parameters of its and SaskGaming’s partnership in platform management. The organization will also issue a call for proposal to the general public, after which a joint adjudication procedure will be conducted to evaluate the project applicant. Next year, the website should be up and operating.
The First Financial Losses
The announcement of the province’s forthcoming regulated online gambling platform will be warmly welcomed by the gaming sector. The unusual situation and shutdown of land-based casinos has significantly harmed in-person gambling, resulting in the SaskGaming Corporation’s first-ever financial losses of approximately CA$13,000,000 for the 2020-21 fiscal year. Now that the gambling platform has been announced, gamblers will have another choice if brick-and-mortar businesses shut down again.
Reopening in the Summer
The Saskatchewan Indian Casino Authority was permitted to resume operations at land-based gaming facilities this summer, and the situation in the province has begun to stabilize. On June 20, 2021, seven of the organization’s casinos have extended their contracts. Bear Claw Casino and Hotel, Living Sky Casino, Painted Hand Casino, Gold Eagle Casino, Gold Horse Casino, Dakota Dunes Casino, and Northern Lights Casino are all operating at a limited capacity at the moment.
