This week, the Lithuanian parliament narrowly passed a law that allows casinos to be built within the country, if approved by referendum. The law, which will be reviewed by the European Commission before being ratified, has been met with opposition from the opposition parties. It now goes to the parliament for a second vote, where there is a chance that it will fail.

Since the announcement of the referendum for the independence of the Kurdistan region, KED officials have been in a state of high anxiety. The referendum is likely to lead to a split in the Kurdistan Region and the loss of the territories of the region. A vote for separation is already underway and the war front between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has opened. The referendum, which is being conducted in the disputed areas by the KDP, may lead to a massive influx of refugees and increase the threat of terrorism in the region.

As of January 10, 2018, more than 33,000 people have signed the petition to prevent the KED from being built in the Municipality of Pampanga, Ilocos Sur. According to the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP), the KED threatens the livelihood of the Lumad in the area because the indigenous people rely on food-gathering from the forests in their domain and the construction of the casino represents a threat to their way of life. The Lumad, who fought back against the construction of the Pampanga River Dam, have therefore denounced the KED as an attack on their rights.

Even though the project has proved time and time again that there is nothing unlawful about its approval and legislative obstacles clearing, the Kingsway Entertainment District continues to be a hot issue in Greater Sudbury. A new virtual petition is circulating throughout the area, spearheaded by Patrick Crowe, with the goal of stirring the pot and perhaps changing the direction of development.

Mr. Crowe has been a vocal opponent of the entertainment zone idea for a long time, and his latest effort came in the form of a petition. It would seek a binding referendum on a regional level, in which voters would be asked whether they want the district built or not. A referendum like this might be set up as an easy-to-understand question.

If everything goes well, Sudbury will witness the building of the Kingsway Entertainment District in the next years, but local opposition seems to have other ideas for the big project. This petition, which was newly started, asks residents for their thoughts on a possible vote on the planned CA$100 million arena and events complex. This question may be included on the municipal election ballot.

The latter is scheduled for October 2022, allowing residents ample time to think about the issue and vote when the time comes. This referendum will be put on the ballot by the municipal council. Those who are interested in the petition may locate it online and learn more about the alternative plan. It shows that instead of constructing a big project that would cost the local taxpayers CA$100 million, renovation may be done.

In the near future, the current Sudbury Community Arena in the city center may be renovated and updated to host live events and entertainment. More than 700 people have signed the petition in favor of the latter plan for the refurbishment of an existing facility thus far. It is expected to revitalize the downtown area.

Referendum in October 2022

It’s worth noting that public transit is well-developed, as is new construction of public areas, restaurants, pubs, and schools. Mayor Brian Bigger provided a good report for the month of June. According to him, the municipal council’s decision to start the project in the region is still valid and may now proceed; if everything goes according to plan, the event center should open in 2024.

He made it clear that the event venue should not be the source of any additional problems. He stated that staff members are working closely with the Kingsway Entertainment District’s partners to ensure that this is the case. For the building process to formally begin, many key tasks must be evaluated and accomplished, according to the study. Choosing a venue operator, obtaining a build RFP, constructing roads and intersections, and submitting design drawings are all part of this process.

Gateway Casinos and Entertainment is the company that wants to build a casino complex in the planned entertainment zone, and it is eager to learn more about the project. PricewaterhouseCoopers just released a fresh study on the event center to see which location would be best for the project. The cost of renovating the downtown arena was estimated to be between CA$125.4 million and CA$128.6 million in the final study.
