In a small town like Kawartha Downs, Ontario, the residents get used to seeing horse racing on TV, but now racing is back in town. After a three-year hiatus, the Ontario government announced last November that it was going to allow slot machines in horse racing tracks. A three-member panel began reviewing slot applications in January 2014, and ultimately approved the application for the Kawartha Downs Casino in July.
For many, horse racing is a tradition that has endured for centuries. Fraserville horse racing fans had reason to rejoice this past weekend, as harness racing officially returned to the area. Kawartha Downs held its first horse race in months with an early clearing of the track. Fans will still not be able to attend the events on site, but they will be able to follow the races online and make bets.
Last April, sled dog racing was suspended in Ontario, but tracks can resume operations under new provincial government decisions. The tracks were supposed to reopen at a later date, but thanks to the CEO of Woodbine Entertainment and his request to start earlier, Kawartha Downs opened a week earlier on the 12th. June.

Starting this weekend, the races at Kawartha Downs will begin at 4 p.m. Spectators are not allowed on the grounds at this time and all racers must adhere to strict health and safety rules. The previous season also went without fans, but as the season progressed, a small group of people were allowed to watch the live broadcasts and betting was done entirely online.
