The World Poker Tour (WPT) has unveiled a new Player of the Year scoring system.
WPT also introduced a new Player of the Year system that incorporates WPTDeepStacks tournaments. Every Main Tour and WPTDS event, starting with the current Lucky Hearts Poker Open, contributes toward the POY standings.
“Every time a player sits down to play a WPT-branded tournament, from Florida to Amsterdam, Australia to Las Vegas, they’ll be trying to win Player of the Year,” Pliska said. “This is another another pillar in the WPT’s and players’ 20th anniversary celebration.”
The old scoring system took into account a player’s finish position as well as the entire prize money for the tournament. This has now been improved to accommodate a larger variety of competitions. POY points are now awarded to all players who finish in the money at any WPT tournament.
Players compete for a share of $30,000 in prize money, with the winner taking home a $15,000 WPT Passport. These money are transferable to any WPT event in the globe. WPT Passports worth $10,000 and $5,000 are awarded to the runner-up and third-place finishers, respectively.
WPT executive tour director Matt Savage remarked, “We wanted to make sure that our new approach provides everyone an opportunity to put in the effort and chase down the POY title.” “On top of the distinction that comes with being named Player of the Year, we wanted a deserving reward to go along with it.”
Daniel Negreanu, Anthony Zinno, and Brian Altman are among the previous champions. Jake Ferro was just named Season XIX’s winner.

Alex Yen is the first winner of the new season.
The Lucky Hearts Poker Open at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida, began off Season XX of the WPT in January. Alex Yen, a Lisle, Illinois native, won the championship for $975,240.
The 36-year-old is a finance graduate of the University of Indiana who has been playing poker full-time for 15 years. He currently resides in Indianapolis, and his live tournament wins total more than $1.3 million. His poker schooling included a lot of time spent at virtual poker tables.
He told WPT.com, “(My buddies and I) began playing for beer money, and they would all defeat me and grab my money.” “I began playing online poker around sophomore year, and that’s when things really started to click and take off.”
Anton Wigg came in second place for $650,180 in a tournament with 1,982 players and a prize fund of $6.4 million. The $3,500 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown is the next tournament on the program, which will take place in April.
