Connecticut is the latest state to get approval for online poker, with a number of interested operators waiting before jumping into the fray. Though Connecticut appears primed for success at first glance, it remains unclear how and when players will be able to stake their bets in real-time on games running at venues around the country.;

The “Connecticut Cleared for Online Poker by Regulators, But No Takers Yet” is a news article that has the headline of “online poker / connecticut“. The article is about how Connecticut’s online poker regulations were cleared by regulators. However, there are no takers yet.

Connecticut Cleared for Online Poker by Regulators, But No Takers Yet

In June of last year, Connecticut became the sixth state to allow internet gambling, including poker. What is the state’s current position on a possible launch?

While nothing is imminent, state gaming regulators have granted regulatory approval to any possible operators. The state’s Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) Gaming Division regulates the sector.

This week, a DCP official talked with USPoker on the process of bringing internet poker to the state.

It’s open for business, but there’s no poker yet.

The good news for online poker players in the Constitution State is that the online poker rules were finalized and went into effect on February 1. Retail sports betting will begin in September 2021, as part of the June gaming legislation. In October, legal internet sports betting and casino gambling became available.

The process of completing “peer-to-peer gambling,” as internet poker is referred to under the law, has taken longer. The agency has received no interest from poker operators or applications from prospective candidates thus far.

“Not to our knowledge,” the CPD official said when asked whether there had been any discussions with other states about interstate compacts.

In order to provide online poker in Connecticut, operators must be affiliated with one of the state’s tribes, according to state rules.

The Mohegan Sun, which is owned by the Mohegan Tribe, and Foxwoods, which is controlled by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, are the two casinos in Connecticut.

Needing to form a partnership

Mohegan Sun works with FanDuel for online sports betting and gambling, while Foxwoods partners with DraftKings. There’s no indication yet on whether either is proposing a joint venture in online poker.

Are there any roadblocks in the way of a launch? If a corporation chooses to proceed, the CPD claims that everything is in place. To offer online poker in the state, prospective operators would need to partner with DraftKings or FanDuel.

The CPD states, “The industry is open, and online gambling is active in the state.” “In order to operate in Connecticut, internet poker operators must associate with an online gaming operator. Betfair Interactive US LLC (FanDuel) and Crown NJ Gaming Inc. (DraftKings) are the two operators permitted to operate online casino games.”

To become third-party operators, PokerStars, partypoker US Network, or WSOP.com would need to reach a deal. If wanted, FanDuel and DraftKings may potentially run their own poker offering.

When it comes to population,

So far, the news has been a little dismal for Connecticut players. However, the process is still in its early stages, and online poker may become a part of the mix in the future.

Nearby New Jersey and Pennsylvania also have online poker, and Connecticut seems to be on the verge of joining them. Connecticut is a significantly smaller state, with a population of about 3.6 million people.

It is, however, almost twice as much as West Virginia (1.8 million). Since its own legalization in March 2019, the Mountain State has yet to see an operator join the market.

Interstate compacts, obviously, would considerably improve the viability of both of these markets in terms of poker. Until then, Connecticut would be a “ringed-in” environment, in which players would only compete against players from the same state.

Nevada has a population of 3.1 million people and just one online poker provider, WSOP.com. However, the All-American Poker Network, the country’s sole shared liquidity network, is managed on that platform. Nevada, New Jersey, and 888poker in Delaware are all part of the network.

Possibilities for the market in Connecticut

Is it possible for a ringed-in Connecticut market to succeed? Operators will have to make that decision. One or two operators may be able to carve out a modest niche for themselves.

New Jersey is the smallest state with a fenced-in environment. However, the population of the Garden State is more than double that of Connecticut.

Being affiliated with online poker may have some advantages for Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods. Large poker scenes may be seen in both games. Mohegan Sun has more than 20 tables, whereas Foxwoods has 35.

Casino executives may regard the online game as providing potential for synergy, as demonstrated with partypoker’s Borgata Poker online skin and the Atlantic City casino of the same name.

Connecticut poker players are still in limbo, and USPoker will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
