The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has filed a complaint against the owner and operators for an Atlantic City casino. The complaints go beyond lax security, and allege that the owners were cheating customers with KED machines without reporting profits to tax authorities.

The “minnow lake restoration group” is a non-profit organization that is fighting to save the minnow lake. The group has been active since 2012 and continues its charge.

Anti-KED Group Continues its Charge

Even in 2022, the Kingsway Entertainment District event center is a contentious subject in Greater Sudbury. Last Monday, the Minnow Lake Restoration Group asked Ward 5 Councillor Robert Kirwan to justify his legal interpretation of the project’s cost-sharing agreement, which they submitted for judicial review.

The municipal council decided in the summer of 2021 to go on with the development of the KED, a CA$100 million project on the city’s outskirts. Gateway Casinos will build a $60 million casino on the site, as well as a hotel, a hockey rink, and other amenities. However, since its introduction a few years ago, it has encountered several challenges.

The Battle Goes On

Mr. Kirwan said last month that, due to a promise written into the cost-sharing agreement, all participants in the KED are legally compelled to finish their separate projects. He even said that he would defend himself in front of a court for making this comment. In light of his assertion, the Minnow Lake Restoration Group confronted him on Thursday and demanded that he prove his case.

The Divisional Court case will not feature witnesses for examination or cross-examination in a court of law, according to the non-press profit’s release. Three judges will make a judgment based on the organization’s evidence, as well as testimony from the City of Greater Sudbury, and no cross-examination of any affidavits, factums, or Examination for Discovery.

Mr. Kirwan’s Examination of Discovery will take place between January 10 and January 24, 2022, at a venue determined by the organization. The non-profit asks the councillor to attend the examination and provide a sworn declaration of his peace. Mr. Kirwan, on the other hand, has yet to reply to the suggestion, according to the group.

When asked by a local media station why he doesn’t check emails from the Minnow Lake Restoration Group or any other anti-KED group, Mr. Kirwan said he doesn’t. He went on to say that he doesn’t pay attention to such communications and isn’t prepared to remark on what they’re up to. He also called the organization’s demand that he substantiate his point of view ludicrous.

A pause has been requested.

At the end of November 2021, the city had to start site preparation at the KED location. However, one of the partners, Gateway Casinos & Entertainment requested for the project to halt. The gaming leader said that says that it cannot proceed with the development until some of the uncertainties around the event centre are resolved. However, they assured that it remains committed to the site.

There are more delays on the horizon.

Following the announcement that Gateway Casinos had requested a halt to the project, Trevor Farrow, a professor and former associate dean at Osgoode Hall Law School, projected that the project will be delayed again. According to him, the non-profit group’s legal action would cause the event center to face yet another delay.
